HOUSTON - It looked like the fans at Minute Maid Park for a rout when the Cubs plated 8 runs off of Brian Moehler in the top of the 1st inning Wednesday, but the Astros offense refused to wave the white flag, rallying to a 11-10 victory.
Trailing 9-3 in the 7th inning, Ted Lilly would leave the game in the hands of the bullpen who couldn't stop the furious late inning barage.
Neal Cotts would retire the first two batters in the 7th, but conscutive hits from Jeff Keppinger, Lance Berkman, and Carlos Lee would bring the Astros within 4 before Angel Guzman shut the door. A sac fly from Mike Fontenot in the top of the 8th would extend the Cubs lead to 10-5.
Guzman would struggle when brought back in the 8th, walking 2 and giving up 2 base-hits allowing the Astros to creep back to within 3 runs while recording just 1 out. Carlos Marmol would surrender a RBI single in to Keppinger after entering in the 8th but would stop the bleeding.
Kevin Gregg would be called on to close out a 10-8 Cubs' lead but couldn't shut the door. An RBI triple would score Hunter Pence who walked to lead off the inning, and Michael Bourn would tie things up with a sacrifice fly.
Neither team would score in the 10th and Jose Valverde would keep the Cubs off the board in the top of the 11th. With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Geoff Blum would reach on a throwing error from Ryan Theriot. Cubs' reliever David Patten would strike out Jason Smith to record the second out of the inning, but a Darin Erstad would blast a walk-off RBI double to complete the miraculous comeback.
